World over, SMEs and businesses has been the main stay of thriving economies and that stands true in Nigeria also. Economic meltdowns and recessions notwithstanding, many enterprises have continued to thrive providing much needed services and products for the welfare of Nigeria’s teeming population even in novel sectors.
Certain organizations have also taken on the task of encouraging entrepreneurship through providing ease of business services, capacity and being umpires of great services and products.
The recent award by Connect Nigeria to Africa’s mental health and behavioral change institution- the Sam Obafemi Behavioral Change Academy (SOBCA) comes to mind in line with the aforementioned.
The professional gesture by Connect Nigeria in Lagos on December 14, 2018 has shown their commitment to their core focus, being one of Nigeria’s best business listing and search engine portals, when they put a spotlight on SOBCA founded by Life coach and Veteran Author, Sam Obafemi. They honoured the organisation with an Award, offered them publicity, 1-year club membership as well as Exhibition at their Business fair all to encourage their work.
Digging deeper why their interest is on SOBCA, it is imperative to state that this Academy has been at the fore front of certifying behavioral change practitioners and coaches in areas of anger management, mental health first aid, fear mastery, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, change management amongst other services which they provide offline and online via www.sobcaonline.com . This same academy hosts the annual Behavioural Change Practitioners Conference all in the last 4 years.
Speaking to the founder of the organisation, Sam Obafemi, he bared his mind by saying “we are excited that our work is being recognized more especially as it gives credence that stakeholders are beginning to make the needed investment to curb negative behavioural tendencies and unhealthy lifestyle in Nigeria. We are so excited about this and cannot thank Connect Nigeria enough for the recognition”
Given the rise and rise of depression, suicide, and mental disorders, SOBCA have been contributing to safeguarding the health and welfare of the nation through their coaching, therapy and counselling services usually working through their network of certified coaches.
It is applaudable that International and credible institutions such as the British Council, and Sawubona, partnered with Connect Nigeria to encourage the work by SOBCA and the big, strong, reliable Union Bank sponsored the award project too.
The Top 100 Emerging SMEs Award ceremony in Marina Lagos was the event where the Award being Certificate of Achievement in recognition of quality service delivery was handed over to SOBCA and indeed other entrepreneurs from organisations across Nigeria that made the list.
The emerging sector of mental health care and therapy is a welcome development in developing countries such as Nigeria and SOBCA has shown commitment and with support from Connect Nigeria, it is imperative they do even more to salvage more Nigerians from mental and emotional breakdown. For a saying goes “a healthy people are a healthy nation”.
Our eyes are fixed on SOBCA as they popularise the good in an industry that has been erstwhile stigmatized and masked in silence leading to breakdown of human productivity, family units and peace in Nigeria. It is indeed a recognition and award well deserved.
