Security experts advocate use of AI to combat insecurity

The Alumni Association of the National Defence College, an umbrella group for retired military officers who served at the Defence College, is leading the talks for the use of tech as a game changer in tackling insecurity. Nigeria’s quest to develop a viable military industrial complex started with the establishment of the Defence Industries Corporation in 1964, a facility that went into decline after the Nigerian Civil War. With the increasing use of technology in security management especially Artificial Intelligence as force multipliers Nigeria seems to be at the threshold where it will have to deploy more technology in combating the evolving security challenges. AI is already used in other climes in many facets of security including, crime prediction, fraud detection and prevention. Russia and China are taking the lead in AI technology. In tackling the security challenges in Nigeria, troops are sometimes overstretched.’Experts have said to entrench the use of technology in figh...

In Africa, the case is not different as governments are putting in draconian measures to halt the spread just like their counterparts in Europe and Asia. With the eminent role health ministers are playing in fighting this global pandemic, I delved into a special finding to uncover the female faces leading the battle and definitely deserve commendation for the works, they have put in so far albeit sorrowful to know that, their works are faced with several challenges because of the under-resourced facilities they manage and how they will be risking their lives in the battle against the virus.

THE FOOD SECURITY IMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19 ON NIGERIA BY NANTS AND WAITAD

1.          The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) and West African Institute for Trade and Agricultural Development (WAITAD) observe that the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic has gradually enveloped the global economy and the populations in fear, resulting in automatic and unwitting declaration of ‘State of Emergency’ on the Health sector by several Governments across the world where the disease has killed many and impacted negatively on the economies. We note that where many deadlier diseases which have even taken more lives have failed to attract respect and attention, the corona virus has seamlessly been saluted and gained more prominence with heavy budgetary allocations accorded thereto as a way of appeasing, pacifying or assuaging its ravaging popularity. 2.          NANTS and WAITAD further note that COVID-19 has caused a serious depletion in the revenue of many countries, especia...

ORDERPAPER’S REMTRACK PUTS PRESSURE ON NASS TO BEEF UP EXTRACTIVE SECTOR GOVERNANCE

To account for financial inflow from crude oil sale, taxes, royalties that make up majority of Nigeria’s income has been a process undertaken especially under NEITI. It however remains a challenge when recommendations are made in Oil and Gas audit reports without being enforced and implemented. Just like in the case of the 2016 NEITI report of $17.055 Billion where 13 recommendations were made which if deployed will close gaps and secure the National income to benefit every Nigerian citizen. The recommendations are still unattended to posing a challenge for the soon-to be released 2017 report, leaving oil reports open ended and unverifiable. A challenge has however been thrown to law makers to ensure compliance, on the heels of the launch of the first and only Remediation tracking app in the world oil market, the Remtrack app easily downloadable on mobile devices. This app which will soon be launched is a product of the legislative and policy advocacy mouthpiece ...
