President George Weah Takes a Salary Cut

President George Weah of Liberia pledged to cut his salary by 25 per cent on Monday, in a nationwide address in which he warned of tough times ahead for a “broke” country. “The state of the economy that my administration inherited leaves a lot to do and to be decided,” the former international soccer star said in an address apparently aimed at lowering high expectations following his election victory at the end of last year to replace Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Anti-Corruption Champion Conferred on Buhari Is Laughable - PDP

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP has described the the anti-corruption Champion conferred on President Muhammadu Buhari at the African Union Summit as laughable, derisory and African joke of the year. This condemnation was contained in a statement by the National publicity secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan. The PDP said it was embarrassing that the Presidency, in its desperation to launder its irredeemably dented image, would resort to exporting its deceptive proclivities to the international arena. Ologbondiyan said African Union were not well briefed of the happenings in Nigeria, hence, the honour.

The former Central Bank Governor, and Emir of Kano His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi the second , surprised guests present at the Muson Centre for the launching of the book of Sir Olaniwun Ajayi in mid 2017. Below is his unedited speech. “Let me start by saying that I am Fulani (laughter). My grandfather was an Emir also fulani my uncle and guardian was also the immediate late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and therefore I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon. Sir Ajayi has written a book. And like all Nigerians of his generation, he has written in the language of his generation. “My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian. The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I cannot forgive people of my generation speaking in that language.

JAMB Picks February as deadline for UTME registration and March for Examination

 The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fixed February 6, as deadline for the sale of registration form for 2018 Unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME). It also fixes March 9 to 17 for the 2018 Examination.  The Registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, said this at a meeting with stakeholders in Abuja. The theme of the meeting is “ Strategic planning on the conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation .” Mr. Oloyede said the mock examination initially scheduled to hold between January 22 and 24 has been moved to the first week in February due to the ongoing strike by non-teaching staff of universities. “We are unable to access our CBT centres because most of them are in the universities and non teaching staff are on strike,” he said. “Regarding the sale of forms, about 10 per cent of the expected candidates have registered, the number of candidates that have registered now is about 283,319,” he said.

Ensuring Prisoners Right to Vote in 2019 - Ugwuoke Kelvin Abuchi

In October 2017, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced to the delight of Nigerians that it is making arrangements with the Nigerian Prisons Service to allow some classes of prisoners to vote in the next general elections scheduled for 2019.  This development was greeted with glee and exhilaration as Nigerians began to envisage hope in the Nigeria of our dream. The announcement signaled Nigeria assuming its place in the comity of nations who have since keyed into this laudable democratic etiquette. Prior to that belated announcement, the Federal High Court, Benin-city, Edo state had in 2014 ruled that inmates of prisons across Nigeria have the right to vote in all elections conducted in Nigeria.

Benue State Youth Plotting Revenge on Herdsmen?

The Fulani herdsmen attacks that engulfed  Benue state which resulted in a bloodbath may be taking a new turn. Youths in Benue state are said to be plotting a revenge mission. Youths in a district called Wadatta in Makurdi, the State capital, reportedly engaged security personnel on Sunday, January 14, 2018. It was said that youths started gathering in a particular place around 8.00pm for unknown reasons but the security personnel who suspected the ulterior motive moved in to squash the move.  This led to a sporadic shoot out between the security men and the youths - no casualty was reported.

Access To Financial Services For Every Nigerian Adult Compulsory For Banks in Nigeria

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has set state-by-state target for the 21 commercial banks and 942 Micro finance banks in the country to ensure that every Nigerian adult has access to financial services. Elizabeth Agu, the CBN Branch Controller, Federal Capital Territory, made this known on Thursday in Abuja at the inauguration of the Financial Inclusion State Steering Committee, FISSCO. She said CBN had broken down the target state-by-state “to ensure that the masses and people at the grassroots have access to financial services such as payments, savings, credit, insurance and pension.” She added that target for banks was set because the CBN planned to achieve 80 per cent financial inclusion by 2020, yet two years to the deadline, the country had only achieved 41.6 per cent. Boko Haram: Nigerian Military Kills 107 Terrorists, Loses 3 Soldiers, 1 Civilian

Troops in Operation LAFIYA DOLE have been making tremendous progress in the ongoing Operation DEEP PUNCH 2 in the various Sectors. So far, the troops have neutralized over 50 Boko Haram terrorists, destroyed and captured high calibre arms and ammunition, especially in the Lake Chad general area.  Troops on Monday 8th January 2018, cleared Boko Haram terrorists in Metele village, Tumbun Gini and Tumbun Ndjamena. During the clearance operations, Boko Haram terrorists abandoned the area in disarray leaving behind livestock, large quantity of foodstuff, motorcycles and donkeys. Also in Metele however, the terrorists attempted to attack troops in harbour, but this was stiffly resisted with heavy casualty on Boko Haram terrorists.

Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Kaduna state chapter Kicks off Indefinite Strike

The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has instructed her member to commence an indefinite strike on Monday, Jan. 8, over the sack of 21,780 primary school teachers of public schools in the state. This was contained in a notice of strike dated Jan. 4, 2018, which was signed by Adamu Anglo the union’s Assistant Secretary General, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Sunday. NAN reports that teachers who were sacked for allegedly failing to score 75 per cent pass mark of the competency test organized by the state government back in June 2017. This circular was circulated to all the union executives in all the local government areas of the state indicated that an earlier two weeks ultimatum was issued to the state government to reverse her decision.
